'Biggest Loser': Quick-fix diet is no fix

Terry Foster / The Detroit News

Helen Phillips tried every quick-fix diet known to mankind.

She ate cabbage soup for a week. She went on the vanilla ice cream and hot dog diet, and she popped diet pills like candy, hoping for that miracle body. The results? She'd lose weight, then gain it back.

"I was a yo-yo dieter for 13 years," said Phillips of Sterling Heights.

Eventually Phillips swelled up to 257 pounds and ended up on the national television show "The Biggest Loser." Now she does things the right way. The days of the quick fix are over. She is now a motivational speaker for Henry Ford Hospital and is working on changing the nutritional menu for Warren Consolidated Schools.

We met this weekend during the Curtis Granderson celebrity basketball game. Phillips is 140 pounds lighter, lost 54.47 percent of her body weight -- and making it up and down the court was not the hardest thing she's done. Phillips has run a marathon, won "The Biggest Loser" and has agreed to join our cause in promoting 40 days and 40 nights.

We are entering the final third of 40 days and 40 nights. Phillips recognizes the importance of our program and others that encourage good, healthy living. Phillips is intrigued by the concept and has agreed to share some of her experiences during our next phase of good living. (Next month we will begin 40 days and 40 nights of exercise.)

"Quick fixes do not work," she said. "It makes things worse. It is quick fixes that really messes you up and creates havoc with your metabolism."

The message is we must do things the right way. Phillips' stint on "The Biggest Loser" was excessive. She worked on her body for six to eight hours a day.

But when she came home, reality hit. The same lifestyle that caused her to gain weight was still there. She needed to work and take care of her family, and did not have endless hours to work on losing weight. "Nothing else changed. I changed," she said. "And I needed to introduce it to my friends. I wanted to come in and be accessible to everybody. You can do this at home. You won't lose like you did on "Biggest Loser."

"When you gain weight your self esteem gets lower," Phillips said. "You get tired and exhausted and you are always looking for a quick fix. It is not a diet. It is a lifestyle change. You can lose 50 pounds with a quick fix. Then what? What happens after that?"

What happens? You normally gain the weight right back.

Weight loss help just a seminar away

By Brandee A. Thomas
bthomas@gainesvilletimes.com

If you are trying to lose weight, but don’t know quite how to proceed you may want to attend a seminar Thursday held by Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

The Weight Loss Seminar will be held in the hospital’s Walters Auditorium from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Hospital staff will offer exercise and dieting tips, as well as discuss various surgical weight loss options.

“We wanted this seminar to be attractive to people in all categories: those who are trying to just lose 15 or 20 pounds, those who need to lose 50 or more pounds and those who are suffering from morbid obesity and need to lose 100 or more pounds as well as resolve co-morbidities,” said Hannah Day, NGMC Bariatric Weight Loss Center program coordinator.

“This seminar is part of our commitment as a program to help educated the community about the importance of weight loss as obesity contributes to so many health problems.”

According to Day, the diet and exercise tips that will be shared by registered dietitian Mindy Bell are important for everyone, no matter what their weight loss goals are.

“All of our speakers do a great job explaining that the information (that Bell) shares about nutrition and exercise is important for everyone, even those who undergo a surgical weight loss procedure,” said Day. “The procedures are just tools to help them in their weight loss quest. They still must eat right and exercise to lose weight and to keep it off long term.”

The different surgical options that will be discussed include banding, gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. Although the goal of all the surgical procedures is the same, the level of invasiveness varies between the different options.

“We feel that these public outreach meetings are vitally important in getting the message out to our community regarding the epidemic of obesity. This is one of the fastest growing health problems in the U.S. and the industrialized world,” said Dr. Charles D. Proctor Jr., who will participate in the seminar.

“Our purpose is to educate the community about this disease and to present some options, both surgical and nonsurgical, in the management of it. Many people are understandably reluctant to pursue surgical weight loss but everyone needs to be educated about the risks and benefits of all options so that they can make an informed decision.”

The seminar is free and open to the public, but participants are asked to register in advance for the event, which includes a complimentary, light dinner.

Does alli Work for Weight Loss? The Results Are In.

Does alli Work for Weight Loss?

Alli is the reduced-strength version of Orlistat, a prescription drug to treat obesity. It’s accepted for over-the-counter sale to chunky adults eighteen years and older. Alli is supposed to be used in association with a low-calorie, low fat diet and regular exercise.

Developed by major drugs manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline, this tablet inhibits the assimilation of fat by the body, and in trials it helped slimmers lose a mean of ten pounds in half a year. Connie DeGeorgio, a fifty year old from Michigan, USA, and who weighed 13 stone before using this tablet, lost 4 stone over 18 months.

In fact it can be debated that Alli is in someways stronger than some prescription pills in the U.S so that the fact Alli is now available at Boots in the United Kingdom or at your local chemist, doctors agree, you must observe your dietary habits so to avoid any side effects.

To enable the drugs to work effectively they’ve got to be taken with a reduced fat, calorie controlled diet. It’s also recommended that you take a multi-vitamin while taking this drug as it can inhibit fat soluble vitamins to some degree. This means vitamins A, D, E, K and beta-carotene. This results in another added cost as well as the price of the Alli diet drugs.

If you eat to much fat, stools can frequently appear oily and emit an unlucky odor. However, this is not a side effect, this is the way the Alli diet tablet works. It’s the tangible treatment of the Alli diet tablet. And these treatment effects aren’t dangerous in any way, you are just loosing fat, not loosing electrolytes. And one would probably rather have that unjustifiable fat flushed away, which is certainly better than have it wrap around your waist or block the arteries.

Now, the folks that experience the bad side effects were not following the Alli plan. The plan teaches you to cut back on certain foods, which are foods high in fat. If the folks that had a bad experience would have taken the tablets the correct way, they would have a good results from it.

Alli works on the premise that it blocks fat by prohibiting certain natural digestive enzymes in your body from working. Thus, you eliminate the undesired fat into the toilet. In order to avoid the potential side effects of gas, cramping and diarrhea, the user MUST restrict their fat intake of not more than 15 grams per meal think about this though, there are certain fats that you need like the Omegas, sometimes called Essential Fats! These are types of fats that basically help you lose weight and help keep vital organs and body functions healthy. They can also help with certain imflamations of the body. Therefor, just because you need to lose weight does not imply that all fats are bad. However because the Alli pill blocks fat assimilation, it also blocks the necessary Fats that your body needs.

Some say this is a bad complication of consuming Alli. However, almost all of the people that experienced these effects weren’t following the Alli plan like they were suspect to. When you buy Alli, it includes precise instructions on the foodstuff you need to eliminate.

Reality Check: Surprise Exit In 'The Biggest Loser' - A reality TV blog by The Baltimore Sun's Sarah Kelber - baltimoresun.com

Surprise Exit In 'The Biggest Loser'

A week ago, Patti and Stephanie looked like one of the teams to beat this season of "The Biggest Loser." But after a disappointing weigh-in, the mother-daughter team found themselves in the hotseat to go home. Here's how it went down.

The contestants recieved a bunch of eye-opening news when Dr. H makes his routine visit to the show. Once again he tells the contestants that they are the most unhealthy ever. (Unlike shows like American Idol, when this show makes claims about something being the biggest or worst, they've always got the statistics to back it up.)

Jillian sat down with mother and son team Cheryl and Daris to discuss their eating habits. Jillian unveils the food that the two eat on a regular basis, and it's basically a tour of Taco Bell. Jillian attempts to eat the mounds of food on the table, but dramatically spits it out into the garbage. (Come on, Jillian! I know it didn't taste that bad.)

The week's challenge involves the contestants having to carry balls across a pool by walking across a 40-foot beam. Maria laments to the camera that she is afraid of the water. (A sign of things to come?)

Lance and Melissa won the challenge, which also meant that they recieved an immunity. Maria and Michael were the last team, which meant they recieved a two pound penalty during the final weigh in. More important was the way they lost. Maria, who I already told you is scared of water, lost her balance and fell to the ground face first in order to avoid the water. The result was a bloody mess, a black eye, and a fractured finger.

Despite the injury, Michael and Maria trained hard and lost a combined 21 pounds. It was enough to place them ahead of Patti and Stephanie, who only lost a combined 7 pounds despite losing 41 pounds the first episode. (Their effort in the first week made them a team to beat. I was truly surprised to find them in last place.)

It should also be noted that Melissa actually gained a pound this week. It was totally strategy because her team had immunity this week. It will likely mean that she will have more to lose next week when there is no guarantee of immunity.

Patti and Stephanie convince the others to vote off Patti because she claims to have a better support system at home.

In the update segment of the show, the audience learns that Patti has lost 43 pounds since the show. It appears that she has made the most of her experience on the show.

New MindBodyFX Weight Loss Blog Reveals Mind Power is Key to Losing Weight

Weight loss expert, Melonie Dodaro, teaches readers that losing weight is more than good nutrition and regular exercise. It's about learning to harness the power of your mind to think in positive ways. One of the most important keys to a healthier body is believing you can lose weight.

Kelowna, BC, January 13, 2010 -- Many dieters say food is the enemy. Melonie Dodaro, founder and CEO of MindBody FX Weight Management Company, believes differently. She is teaching dieters that food is not their problem. It's their mindset. To get the word out, Dodaro has launched a new blog as a resource for anyone who has struggled to maintain a healthy weight.

Dodaro's new blog, at http://blog.mindbodyfx.com, features articles by Dodaro, podcasts, videos, photos and more. The blog educates readers on how to change the way they think so they can overcome hunger and cravings. Eat healthier. Stay motivated. And recover from setbacks. Ultimately, they achieve their ideal weight. The advice and secrets Dodaro shares on the blog are taken from her weight loss program, The Complete MindBody FX Lifestyle Program: A Total Transformation System for Permanent Weight Loss, and her book, "The MindBody FX Lifestyle."

Initial topics covered on the blog include:

• Affirmation guidelines to achieve your ideal weight. (How to use affirmations to visualize the results you want to achieve.)

• What beliefs control your life. And your weight? (The No. 1 predictor of your weight loss success is not your sex, age, IQ, or heredity, but rather the belief you will succeed.)

• Three things you can do now to achieve your ideal weight. (Making healthy choices. Staying focused. Keeping a record of emotional triggers play core roles in reaching your ideal weight.)

"I've seen negative thinking and low self-esteem prevent millions of people from losing weight and keeping it off," says Dodaro. "But the same mind that creates these psychological barriers can also eliminate them. The mind is the difference between people achieving their weight loss goals, and wallowing in an endless cycle of yo-yo dieting. I started this blog because I saw the need to share my knowledge and secrets with more people. I wanted to help them enjoy all the health, happiness, and confidence they deserve."

The Complete MindBody FX Lifestyle Program ( http://bit.ly/CompleteMindBodyFXLifestyle ) is a system Dodaro developed after 10 years of owning several famous-name weight loss centers. At her centers, she saw dieters fail over and over again. Even though the programs were based on sound nutritional guidelines and personalized weight loss counseling. Dodaro realized the missing component was correcting the dieters' mindset, which was predominantly negative. After studying with some of the world's top health and mind experts, Dodaro developed The Complete MindBody FX Lifestyle Program. This program educates dieters on how to master "the mind-body connection," or change the way they think so they can achieve permanent weight loss. She has also written a new book, "The MindBody FX Lifestyle," ( http://www.mindbodyfx.com/book.html ) which covers many of these same principles. She teaches how to move past denial. Create new habits. And live a healthy and active lifestyle.

Both the press and public are invited to visit the MindBody FX blog or subscribe to the blog's RSS feed at http://blog.mindbodyfx.com. Comments are invited (and moderated). Journalists and bloggers interested in learning more about the blog or interviewing MindBody FX senior executives can email Media@MindBodyFX.com.

Milk wins in weight war

Teenagers wanting to maintain a healthy body weight should forget about diet soft drinks, and go for milk instead according to new research .

Researchers from the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health used data from Project EAT (Eating Among Teens), a five-year study of eating patterns among 2294 adolescents, to examine the relationship between beverage intake and change in Body Mass Index.

They found that teenagers who drank milk had a significantly lower increase in BMI than those who rarely or never consumed milk.

This is consistent with a growing body of scientific research which shows a connection between dairy consumption and weight management in adults.

Some studies show that people who consume at least the government's recommended two to three servings of low or reduced-fat dairy each day were more successful with weight management and weight loss than those who don't.

Interestingly, diet soft drink consumption was associated with BMI gain.

The authors suggested that this may be due to the relationship between diet soft drink consumption and dieting behaviours.

They noted that dieting has been shown to be associated with weight gain in previous studies with adolescents.

The study's authors concluded that interventions with adolescents should promote the consumption of low-fat milk and decrease the availability of sugar sweetened beverages in school and home settings.

Dairy Australia's dietitian Glenys Kerrins said unfortunately many Australian teenagers and young women cut back on dairy when they were watching their weight but this research showed that that was the last thing they should do.

Her advice for managing weight was to ``cut out junk foods, exercise more, and focus on eating nutrient-rich foods, including three serves of dairy, every day''.
